2.4.1 _I_f__Y_o_u__a_r_e__R_u_n_n_i_n_g__a__N_e_t_s_c_a_p_e__1_._1__o_r__1_._1_._1__W_e_b__S_e_r_v_e_r
If your system is running a Netscape 1.1 or 1.1.1 server,
you need to make a few changes to the server setup to enable
Out Box and Whats New to work through the Netscape server.
If you are unfamiliar with how to configure your Netscape
server, contact the person who usually configures the
server. More informaton is available in the Netscape
Commerce and Communications Servers Administrator's Guide,
Chapter 1, Installing the server, Section 2, Using the
Server Manager. If installed, this book is accessible by
selecting Online Books from the Help menu on the toolchest.
Start the Netscape Server Manager by going to the URL
http://YourServerName:AdminPort/ (e.g. http://host1:8080/).
Type your administrator name and password when prompted by
Netscape.
1. Scroll to the section "CGI and Server Parsed HTML" and
select "Specify a directory that will contain CGI programs
only"
+o Type "cgi-bin" in the first text field.
+o Type "/var/www/cgi-bin" in the second text field.
+o Click the "Make These Changes" button followed by
"Return to the Server Manager" link.
2. Choose "Activate CGI as file type for part of your
server:"
+o Select "I'd like to activate a CGI as a file type."
+o Click the "Make These Changes" button followed by
"Return to the Server Manager" link.
3. Scroll to the section "URL Mappings" and select "Map a

field.
+o Click the "Make These Changes" button followed by
"Return to the Server Manager" link.
4. Copy images to the Netscape Server with the following
steps:
- 3 -
+o If a directory called "images" does not exist in the
Document Root of the Netscape Server, create one. You
can create this directory using "dirview" or by typing
"mkdir full-path-of-document-root/images" in a shell.
You can determine the full path of the document root
for your Netscape Server by clicking on the "Document
Config" link in the Server Manager.
+o Copy all files in /var/www/httpd/htdocs/images to this
directory. For example if you have the settings above
you can do this by typing "cp /var/www/htdocs/images/*
/usr/ns-home/htdocs/images" in a shell.
5. Note: You have two choices in Step 5. Please do only ONE
of 5(a) OR (b).
5(a). If you want the machines default home page to be the
Outbox generated home page:
Note: If you use this approach, you can still add your own
content to the Outbox generated home page by editing
the file "/var/www/htdocs/index.html".
+o Choose "Document Configuration".
+o Click on the "Home Page" button to select a different
home page for the machine and type
"/var/www/htdocs/index.html" in the text field next to
it.
+o Click the "Make These Changes" button followed by
"Return to the Server Manager" link.
5(b). If you want your machines default home page to
continue to be the one you currently have, but would like to
access the Outbox generated page by a new name, say
"Outbox.html", do the following:
+o Choose "Map a URL to a local directory".
+o Type "Outbox.html" in the first text field. The
corresponding URL for your Outbox generated home page
will be http://your-machine-name/Outbox.html. You can
replace "Outbox.html" by whatever name you choose.
+o Type "/var/www/htdocs/index.html" in the second text
field.
+o Click the "Make These Changes" button followed by
"Return to the Server Manager" link.

2.4.2 _I_f _y_o_u _w_e_r_e _p_r_e_v_i_o_u_s_l_y _r_u_n_n_i_n_g _a _N_e_t_s_c_a_p_e _S_e_r_v_e_r _o_n
_t_h_i_s _m_a_c_h_i_n_e: If you were previously running a Netscape
Server on this machine and have removed this software from
it, you need to do the following to enable Out Box and Whats
New:
1. Open a shell window by choosing "Unix Shell" from the
Desktop toolchest.
2. Log in as root by typing "su" at the shell prompt. Type
in the root password if you have one.
3. Remove the Netscape Server config files by typing "rm
/var/config/netsite /var/config/ns_httpd" at the shell
prompt.

2.4.3 _I_f__y_o_u__a_r_e__R_u_n_n_i_n_g__a__N_e_t_s_c_a_p_e__1_._0__S_e_r_v_e_r If you are
running a Netscape 1.0 Web Server, there is a new release
(version 1.1.1) of the server. Silicon Graphics, Inc.
recommends that you upgrade to this release.
Note: Outbox and Whats New will not work with the 1.0
release of the server. If you don't want to upgrade
your server, you can remove the "outbox", "webserver"
and "whatsnew" products on your system.
2.4.4 _I_n_s_t_a_l_l_a_t_i_o_n _o_f _a _N_e_t_s_c_a_p_e _1._1._1 _S_e_r_v_e_r _o_n _a _m_a_c_h_i_n_e
_r_u_n_n_i_n_g _O_u_t_b_o_x: The Outbox server uses port 80, which is
the default for the HTTP protocol. This prevents Netscape
from binding to this port during installation. To install a
Netscape 1.1.1 Server on a machine running Outbox, follow
this order of installation.
1. Install the Netscape software using "swmgr" or "inst".
2. Become root in a shell and type "chkconfig ns_httpd on".
3. Reboot the machine, and the Outbox server will be
automatically turned off. Outbox will be disabled till you
follow the instructions above to enable it with a Netscape
server.
2.5 _T_o__t_u_r_n__o_f_f__O_u_t_b_o_x_:
To turn outbox off, for example on a secure system, follow
the following instructions:
1. Open a shell window by choosing "Unix Shell" from the
Desktop toolchest.
2. Log in as root by typing "su" at the shell prompt. Type
in the root password if you have one.
3. Type "chkconfig outbox off" and reboot your machine.
2.6 _S_e_c_u_r_i_t_y__C_o_n_s_i_d_e_r_a_t_i_o_n_s_:
The Outbox and webserver products have the following
security implications:
- 6 -
+o Installation creates a directory with mode 777 (read,
write and execute priviledge to all users). You can
change the permissions on this directory to be more
restrictive.
+o Information about the users, machine configuration and
some user files are accessible to others on the same
network. You can stop this by disabling Outbox
completely. To do this follow the instructions below.
